I left my “safe” job about a year ago. Since then I’ve been taking on some client work to pay the bills, and on the side building coding tools to speed up my own dev process.

Like many indie devs, I’ve tried Copilot, Cursor, Claude… but when I wanted to build something real (like a web app with user auth or multi-module system), they just weren’t enough. As indie hackers or small teams, we usually don’t have the budget for a big dev team — but we still want to ship products fast.

So I started building my own AI coding tool. My goals:

Understand complex requirements written in natural language (not just single functions).

Generate structured design + end-to-end runnable code, not just fragments.

Help indie devs launch usable products faster, while keeping design and code aligned for easier maintenance.

Discord Indiehackers Chat

Ads here

Media and technology have woven a giant web. Information moves at the speed of light. Trends can appear, explode, and disappear overnight. Remember "cup stacking" competitions in schools? Kids raced to stack cups after class. But just six months later, the trend faded away. And what about those "double-collared polo shirts"? Teens wore two polos with popped collars. Some even had words like "DOPE" printed inside. Now those styles feel like ancient fashion fossils.

For regular people, missing a trend is no big deal. But for businesses? Being slow can mean life or death.

Trend Hunters: The Business Telescope

Spotting trends in the flood of information is crucial.
A GEO Audit is a process that checks how often your business, product, or website actually shows up in these AI-generated responses, either as a mention or a cited source. The rules are different: with Google, you might still get clicks from position seven or eight. In generative search, only a small handful of brands, sometimes just two or three, are surfaced in the AI's final summary. The rest simply don't appear.

Why Are GEO Audits Gaining Attention?

The search landscape is shifting fast. Analysts predict AI assistants could soon answer as many queries as Google itself. More people are relying on chatbots for direct answers, and often never see a list of traditional web links.

What's surprising to many founders and marketers is that brands that rank highly in Google may be completely absent from ChatGPT answers. AI models tend to recommend only the most authoritative brands for a given question. As a result, "winner-takes-all" is even more true in GEO than in classic SEO. This is why more startups are starting to invest in GEO Audits, measuring how often they're cited, linked, or named by these new AI engines.

Discord Indiehackers Chat

Ads here

Hey IndieHackers, I’m proud to say after a year of trying and failing multiple projects I made $100 in one week from GrepJob - a niche job board for software engineers. Here is my story of how I picked a winning idea, got initial traction from reddit, converted to a paid product, and the lessons I had to learn to reach this milestone.

Picking a winning idea

While I was working on MassApply, a job application service for software engineers, I learned that finding relevant jobs to apply to is very painful on mainstream platforms like LinkedIn. It was so painful that I quit working on MassApply, even though I was pretty sure people would pay for it.

Around the same time, I discovered a couple niche job boards that used AI + web scraping to offer a much better experience compared to LinkedIn. These job boards were charging for access, and after some digging I realized that they are actually making a lot of money.

Discord Indiehackers Chat

Ads here

Hey all,

I‘m Matthias, based in Germany, but happy to partner up with anyone around the globe. I’ve bootstrapped a bunch of projects from scratch myself, but none of them took off yet. I’m now looking to partner up with someone who can take over the business (sales/marketing) side of things and ideally has a project idea in a niche or industry in which they’ve got domain expertise and a network we can tap into for first users/customers.

I’ve got multiple years of experience in Web development (frontend, backend, cloud) and have quite some experience with AI projects. So ideally the project would be a Webapp of some kind, maybe with some AI feature, but I’m totally open to use whatever tech is needed for the project.

I’m currently working full time, so at the beginning I could dedicate nights and weekends.

Discord Indiehackers Chat

Ads here

Ben Chestnut and Dan Kurzius started Mailchimp as a side project without external funding. They focused on solving email marketing problems for small businesses. By listening to their customers and continuously improving their product, they grew Mailchimp from a small startup into a billion-dollar company. This wasn’t an overnight success; it was about consistent, organic growth driven by real customer needs.

Basecamp: Building on customer loyalty

Jason Fried and David Heinemeier Hansson built Basecamp by focusing on what their customers really needed. The company was originally a web design agency, and Basecamp started as an internal tool for the agency. However, they thought they were on to something when clients started requesting it for their own projects. Without chasing venture capital, they concentrated on creating the product slowly and continuously improving it based on feedback. This approach allowed them to grow a loyal customer base and a profitable business, demonstrating that bootstrapping can lead to sustainable growth.

Discord Indiehackers Chat

Ads here

End of 2023 – We tried different marketing channels and eventually realized that a web-based summary product wasn't going to cut it. Fortunately, we had already started working on an app.

Early 2024 – We pivoted, transforming Storist.me into a service designed to help users improve their English from Intermediate to Advanced through engaging content. If you're worried about all the previous work going to waste, don’t be! It turns out that quality content is what users appreciate most, and we began putting more effort into developing the app.

June 2024 – We launched the app, and things started moving. We were cautious with our marketing, but the results were promising. We even started gaining traction with B2B clients.

September 2024 – By this time, we had paying users from different countries, made some exciting corporate sales (including with Muse Group!!!), and focused on improving the user experience. We’re now making up to $1,500 per month with minimal marketing spend.

Discord Indiehackers Chat

Ads here

Hey, Indie Hackers!

When it comes to digital marketing and SEO, you’ve probably heard the term "SERP" thrown around a lot. Figuring out how SERP, SEO, and search engines all fit together can really help you optimize your website and boost its ranking in search results.

What is SERP?

SERP stands for Search Engine Results Page. Every time you type a query into a search engine like Google or Bing, the search engine pulls up a list of web pages that are most relevant to what you’re looking for. This list is the SERP.

The Relationship Between SERP and SEO

SEO, or Search Engine Optimization, is all about tweaking your website to make it show up higher in those search results. The goal is to get your site to appear as close to the top of the SERP as possible for relevant queries, so you can attract more clicks and traffic. SEO strategies typically include things like keyword optimization, improving content quality, building links, and making technical adjustments.

Discord Indiehackers Chat

Ads here

Preparing my store listing took me about a week. Preparing the screenshots I created using Figma took the most time. You must also create a privacy policy if you collect personal information like emails. Finally, after manual testing, I submitted my extension to the Chrome Web Store. In my case, it only took a day for it to be approved and published.

What I learned from building a Chrome extension

I learned that whatever you’re working on outside your full-time job will probably take much longer than you hoped. I believe I will get faster at it over time as I can start re-using some of the components and code I wrote. There was a learning curve since I hadn’t built a browser extension before.

I built this extension for myself, but I want to talk to people and get feedback earlier for my next project. As developers, we are comfortable building products. That’s the easy part. The hard part is marketing, and marketing is what I will be spending my time on next.

Discord Indiehackers Chat

Ads here

Hello, Indie Hackers!

You might have heard of the Google algorithm, but do you know what it actually is? In simple terms, the Google algorithm is a complex set of rules and formulas that Google uses to determine which web pages should appear at the top of search results. Every time you search on Google, the algorithm quickly sifts through billions of web pages to find the most relevant ones.

The main functions of the Google algorithm include:

Keyword Matching: Determining the relevance of web content to user search queries.

Page Quality Assessment: Evaluating the credibility and authority of web pages by analyzing content quality, user experience, and external links.

User Intent Understanding: Going beyond keyword matching to understand the intent behind the search to provide the most relevant results.

Discord Indiehackers Chat

Ads here

Beginning an SEO journey is both exciting and challenging. In my first week, I focused on building a strong foundation for long-term success. Using Ahrefs, I scouted websites within my niche. Here’s how I approached this:

Identifying Competitors: I listed top-performing websites in the web scraping and data extraction niche.

Analyzing Competitor Content: By examining their top pages, I gained insights into the kind of content that resonates with the audience.

Discord Indiehackers Chat

Ads here

To sum up, I recommend RevenueCat to all developers looking for a reliable solution for managing subscriptions in their apps. RevenueCat can be compared to solutions like Stripe, but while Stripe is web-focused, RevenueCat is essentially Stripe for mobile applications. It provides all the necessary tools for managing subscriptions, which makes it an ideal choice for developers who want to focus on creating content and functionality rather than managing payments and subscriptions.

Thank you for reading this article!
I particularly like the Postgres Realtime feature. It allows you to subscribe to database changes and receive updates in real time. For instance, you can subscribe to changes in a table and get notifications whenever data is modified. This opens up vast possibilities for creating interactive and dynamic applications. You don't need to implement complex logic with web sockets or other technologies; everything works "out of the box."

Another powerful feature of Supabase is serverless functions, which run on Deno. Deno is a modern runtime for JavaScript and TypeScript that ensures high security and ease of use. Thanks to this, I can quickly develop and deploy server functions that run in the cloud. This allows for the creation of powerful server-side logic without the need to manage infrastructure.

Discord Indiehackers Chat

Ads here

I have a team of developers and have good experience in developing different kinds of applications on both the web and mobile for different domains. But as time goes on, I want to root down, stabilize my business, choose a niche, solve a problem. Not wait for projects from freelancing sites, I'm done with those kind of stuff. Now I want to do something fresh, build something, it is still a software development agency but now we are going to solve a problem in a niche and grow in that domain rather than running everywhere doing different kinds of projects. Like I said I have the tech team but I want someone who could think, plan about the business aspects like what niche to choose, how to identify a problem, how to solve it, how to approach clients, how to convert a lead, how to expand the business. They take in feedback, analyze it, and creatively formulate solutions. Their decision-making and dedication make them excellent workers with cool insights. They generally follow a routine but have complex processes to solve team and community problems. They are creative and effective in their work.

Are there services that need software developers?

Yes, there are.
This is when I decided to take action and see if I could get a basic AI app/tool listing directory into the market while balancing my other side hustles and a full-time job in a month.

And before we get started: don’t expect something “commercial”, there is nothing to sell. Also, don’t expect to see a success story blueprint as there isn't one yet. It's a story of a side hustler who is trying to use the skills to benefit others in the big wide web of AI.

If you’re still here… let’s go!

Who am I?

First of all, let me present myself. People know me under the pseudonym: @Teamgrowthhacker. I’m a Growth Marketer turn product person-ex founder and forever tinkerer and an active member of the accelerator landscape — enough?!

My last startup gig made me learn an incredible amount of things, but most important of all, it helped me understand the world of growth hacking better.

Discord Indiehackers Chat

Ads here

Hi!

Recently I was thinking about getting back to Twitter (or x?) in order to get some clients (I do webapps with Angular). That said I am a total noob when it comes to posting, what to write, when, to motivate myself and so on.

Do you guys have some playbook you go by? Be it a book/challenge/tutorial or anything of this sorts that could set me or anyone else on a right track?

Thank you very much for your input!

Discord Indiehackers Chat

Ads here

Then I found Pocketbase. Pocketbase solves many problems such as authentication, Database, File Storage, and Admin interface out of the box.

But if you want to create a whole web app (especially without front end frameworks), there aren't many complete reference implementations.

I simply solved this problem, by creating an example but complete SaaS boilerplate that demonstrates how to use this modern software to succeed as an indie hacker, without getting overwhelmed by complexity.

It wasn't until I learned patience to not anxiously rush towards the easiest way to make money. With patience, you can calmly observe an information stream through Twitter or whatever your information diet is, and wait until you see something that speaks to you, before you invest the time in.

Discord Indiehackers Chat

Ads here

For analyitcs, I'm using Umami, the free plan has what I exactly need, and the experience is straightforward for someone like me who know the basics about analytics and for a simple website like FrontendEase.

For graphics and illustrations, I used Storyset and Figma. I have been writing code for decades, but before that I used to be a designer so I know my way around design tools like Figma, which was super beneficial to get some graphics done for the website and the sharing material.

For payments, I obviously went with Stripe. As a frontend engineer who works daily with user interfaces, I have a special place in my heart for Stripe's UI. Although Stripe has lots of information in their UI, they did a good job in the user experience. I don't feel lost or distracted on their web application. They hire really good designers and frontend engineers to produce such a beautiful and easy-to-use application despite the complexity.

Discord Indiehackers Chat

Ads here

Realizing that he was not the only one who would find an AI application that provided Excel formulas useful, the founder decided to expedite the development process. He created a basic application that lacked a paywall, login, or any advanced features. The app consisted of an input field where users could type their instructions, a button to generate the formula, an output field where the formula would appear, and a button to copy the formula.

Next, he shared the website on the Excel subreddit, where users provided valuable feedback and recommendations for the product. This feedback was utilized to develop the site into what it is today.

SITEGPT

AI tool to create and train web chatbots - $180k revenue

In March, Twitter got filled with a lot of AI content.
At this point, I was convinced that it would be possible for me to build a framework on top of React that was both minimal and powerful, and this is when Firebolt was born.

Firebolt is an ultra lightweight framework for building full-stack web apps using React. Most importantly, Firebolt introduces two shiny new things to the React framework eco-system that I personally love because it is both simple and powerful:

Unified Routes: A single directory for all pages, layouts, assets and endpoints. This is super intuitive and keeps all things accessible by a URL in a single place instead of spread out across different directories.

Composability: Any component in your app can fetch or interact with data on the server (ie a database). This paired with CSS-in-JS means you build entire platforms using JUST components. This is absolutely mind boggling once you try it.

Discord Indiehackers Chat

Ads here

Hosting: Microsoft Azure provided the cloud infrastructure I needed to deploy Bridge Path. Its scalability and reliability meant that I could focus on improving the application without worrying about server downtimes or managing physical servers.

The journey from Python notebooks to a responsive web application was full of challenges, self-doubt, and countless learning moments. It took months of testing different tooling's and technologies before settling on the stack that met my needs. Yet, this journey has been incredibly rewarding. Not only did I manage to build and launch Bridge Path, but I also gained invaluable experience in web development, design, and cloud hosting.

Now, with a robust tech stack and continuous improvement ethos, I'm able to enhance Bridge Path's features and design more seamlessly.
As a developer who has spent a considerable amount of time working with both Vue and React, I've grown to appreciate the unique strengths of each. However, if I had to pick a side, I'd lean towards Vue for several reasons.

Simplicity and Learning Curve

First and foremost, Vue's simplicity is its greatest advantage. While React has a steeper learning curve, especially for beginners, Vue is far more approachable. Its template syntax and clear separation of concerns make it easier for newcomers to grasp. In Vue, everything is neatly compartmentalized – the HTML, JavaScript, and CSS are in distinct blocks, making it more intuitive for someone who's transitioning from a basic understanding of web technologies.

Flexibility and Ease of Integration

Discord Indiehackers Chat

Ads here

I studied product design and worked as an architect. I made a difficult decision to leave the family business to do web design full-time.

I took, and walked out of, a series of seriously underpaid jobs. I got fed up of working for other people.

I read a lot and applied everything I learned and I grew. At this point, I had some small measure of "success" by traditional standards. I had reached six figures, I had more prestigious clients, I had authority in my niche. The BBC even asked me to speak at schools about careers in design.

But I was totally burnt out.

I had everything I'd worked so hard to achieve. So why was I so miserable? At this point, I realised that after a certain point, more money doesn't make you happier.

What "enough" money means is different for everyone, but I had enough money, and now I'd had enough of working 80-hour weeks too.

Discord Indiehackers Chat

Ads here

a) Is such a tool useful? b) Identify which features are most beneficial c) Learn about similar solutions already in the market

Thanks for taking the time to read this, and I look forward to hearing from you!

Feb 20, 2024

Hey everyone,

I'm developing a machine learning web app aimed at professionals outside the tech sphere. It's a simple tool where you can input your data, and the web app will clean it up, provide some generic tips of excluding incomplete columns, analyze it using random forest algorithm and try to identify if any significant trends exist and if a more detailed ML model is worth considering.

The idea behind this tool is to bridge the gap between data and non-machine learning professionals. Whether you're in marketing, finance, or healthcare, if you work with data but lack expertise in ML, I'm hoping such a tool is useful. But then again, I could be wrong.

Discord Indiehackers Chat

Ads here
